The Idiots
THE IDIOTS
METRO TARTAN
RELEASED 14 May 1999
The Idiots is about a group of people who choose to confront the norm of middle-class society by exploring and releasing their ‘inner idiot’. As the ‘spassing’ increases, the group begins to break up. Both amusing and disturbing, the improvised feel of the film is a refreshing change from the standard studio picture. The film may well upset some people. It might be viewed as offensive but I don’t think that’s the case. It’s challenging the notion of being in control and what the results are to deliberately let go of rationality. The Idiots was filmed under the Dogma ‘95 Manifesto (a counteraction to conventional filmmaking), meaning various constraints such as natural lighting, hand-held camera, no sets and no post-production sound.
