The Straight Story

THE STRAIGHT STORY
FILM FOUR
RELEASED 3 December 1999

David Lynch is known for some of the most disturbing movie moments of the last fifteen years so it comes as a complete turnaround that his new film is being distributed in America by Disney. When 73 year-old Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) learns his estranged brother is ill, he decides to make the 300-mile journey to see him – on a lawnmower! Richard Farnsworth carries the film admirably, involved in virtually every scene, and Lynch restrains from using any camera trickery, happy to concentrate on the beauty of the American mid-west. A gentle and unusual movie.
