RELEASED 19 November 1999
Set in the 1820s, Evgeny Onegin (Yev-Gay-Nee Oh-Nay-Giin) (Ralph Fiennes) leaves St. Petersburg to take charge of a country estate left to him by a wealthy uncle. Despite lacking the sophistication of the city, Onegin warms to the simple lives of his new neighbours. But after rejecting the youthful advances of Tatyana (Liv Tyler) he is challenged to a duel by her sister’s fiancee and has to return to the city, a changed man. Six years later Onegin chances upon Tatyana and attempts to regain her love. Adapted from one of Russia’s most famous novels, debut director Martha Fiennes has captured the beauty of the Russian landscape and the tragic circumstances of Onegin’s mistakes.
