UNBREAKABLE
BEUNA VISTA
RELEASED 29 December 2000
Much of the enjoyment taken from Unbreakable is not knowing where the story is taking you, so all I’m going to say about the plot is that David Dunn (Bruce Willis) plays a character who discovers he has unusual powers to say the least, and that Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) suffers from a rare bone condition that means he ‘breaks’ extremely easily. A national tragedy occurs and the two are brought together. It’s a genre usually played out in a big special effects-laden style but the director (M. Night Shalayman) opts for a low-key, realistic approach to his subject matter. What most people are going to be upset about is the ending. Already proving to be controversial amongst viewers, it definitely is a shock initially. But knock the ideas and characters around with a few friends afterwards and you may find yourself agreeing that the resolution is clever and perfectly logical. It also lends itself to a proposed trilogy of ‘Unbreakable’ films, a prospect to savour indeed.
